At last, the announcement that is long, long overdue, here are details on this year’s series of comedy music concerts and events happening at MarsCon 2011, and info on how to support it via our annual Fund Raiser album release. But first, here’s the basic info on the convention…

MarsCon 2011 is March 4th thru 6th, at the Holiday Inn Select in Bloomington, MN, right across from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport and next to the Mall of America. Go to http://www.marscon.org for more information and to pre-register. It’s $45 for a weekend badge until January 31st, after that it’ll be $60 at the door. This year’s Guests of Honor include actor Alexis Cruz, Four-time Hugo Award winner Lois McMaster Bujold, Joe & Megan Rheault of Dirtyinks and Pixiegirl Studio, and Bjo & John Trimble (famous for the “Save Star Trek” campaign).

So which comedy musicians are coming to perform at the MarsCon 2011 Dementia Track you ask? Well first of all, there’s MarsCon 2011’s Music Guest Of Honor, one of Dr. Demento’s most requested acts of the 2000’s, a founding member of the FuMP, and a colossal fan favorite at MarsCon, it’s the one and only ShoEboX, also known as, WORM QUARTET! Also performing this year: Making not only his first ever appearance at MarsCon, but his first ever appearance in the MidWest, it’s the animated animator himself, TVs KYLE! There’s a couple of acts getting their first main stage concerts this year. We have the world’s first and only hard rock filk cover band, TOYBOAT! And performing in their new rock band trio configuration, we have SOGGY POTATO CHIPS! The new album is still on-track to be released at CONvergence 2010 on July 3. We’ve seen the art proofs — the UPC means it’s real — and the master CD should be in the hands of the duplicator as we speak. We will be performing once again at Minneapolis-St. Paul’s premiere speculative fiction convention, CONvergence. This annual four-day convention unites thousands of science fiction and fantasy fans in an orgy of geeky expression. Possible Oscar’s brand of nerdy rock fits right in.

Along the way, we debuted those three songs we talked about over the last month. The big hit of the three seemed to be “Get Our Geek On”, which will appear on our next album (hopefully due by year’s end). We also performed a cover of The Lonely Island’s “I’m On A Boat” during which Jared doffed his pants and shoes to reveal…his swim trunks and flippy floppies.

I think this was the best Possible Oscar show ever. It was only our third performance as a quartet, but things are feeling pretty tight, and we’re having fun. The songs are comfortable enough now that we are free to just play and interact with each other and the audience.

Presented for your amusement are the two new Possible Oscar posters for CONvergence 2009, happening next week, July 2-5. These two were derived from a couple of pieces of art that were sitting around waiting for a purpose.

I have to thank my friend Kiki for the excellent example of Engrish presented on the second poster. We will also be posting a variation of the Final Fantasy poster from MarsCon 2009 because it was so awesome it deserves to be seen by the larger CONvergence crowd.

So, who is planning to come see us perform on Friday, July 3 @ 10 O’Rock PM in Harmonic CONvergence? We’d love to see as many of you as we can! Don’t forget: fans who show up for Feng Shui Ninjas at 7:00 and Beth Kinderman and the Player Characters at 8:30 and stick around for us will receive a special surprise.

We will be performing a couple new arrangements of some old P.O. favorites. There’s also that small matter of not one, not two, but three new songs that will make their live debut on stage at CONvergence. The Pentagon has just given us clearance to release the titles of the new songs. They are:

• “Get Our Geek On (It’s About Time)”
• “Rock Is FTW”
• “Kill The Enemies”

Two of the new songs are original; one is a parody. You’ll just have to see us live to learn which is which.

We’ve reserved a slot on The FuMP on July 10 to release one of these songs — which means it will not be 365 consecutive days without a Possible Oscar release on The FuMP.

We’d like to encourage our fans to attend the concerts of all three of the fannish bands performing on Friday night at CONvergence. Fans who see both Feng Shui Ninjas and Beth Kinderman & The Player Characters before enduring our performance might receive a special token of our appreciation. I said might — this is still in the planning stage.

Does anyone have requests for our upcoming show at CONvergence? We have an hour slot, so there’s time to play more stuff. Fire at will!

But that’s not all! Our set will also include a couple of new cover songs that fans of funny music should appreciate, as well as not one, but TWO NEW SONGS. That’s right: the long, slow march to album number two has finally passed a milestone. One of the new songs has been in development for over 18 months, while the other one’s lifetime can be counted in days.

It appears we are scheduled to perform at 10:00 PM on Friday, July 3, if the master schedule for CONvergence is to be believed. We know Friday is one of the big party nights, but fear not: if you can’t be bothered to stop drinking, the bar is right across the hall from Harmonic CONvergence. Bottoms up!

We know a lot of ours fans will already be at CONvergence. We’re sure you can find the time between shots of blue libations to see us kick out the hot jams. Be on the lookout for coupons for one complementary rocking of ones socks off.

Do not miss out on the hottest — literally, this thing is in JULY — sci-fi and fantasy convention the Twin Cities has to offer. Register before May 15, 2009 for only $50; after that, the price goes up to $70 at the door.

THE MARSCON 2009 DEMENTIA TRACK FUND RAISER CD/MP3 sets
With the exception of the Music Guest Of Honor, MarsCon can’t afford cover the travel and hotel costs for the dozen or so comedy music acts that come from all across the country to perform at MarsCon. That is why for the past few years we have released a Fund Raiser CD set to help raise money to cover the lodging costs of our other out-of-town main stage dementia concert performers.

This year’s collection are all live recordings from the concerts performed at MarsCon 2008, featuring last year’s Music Guests of Honor Hot Waffles, Paul & Storm, and many of the acts returning in 2009. There are 2 sets available in 2 different ways. There’s the regular 2 CD set for $20 (which is 2 hours and 40 minutes of music, and comes with an instant MP3 download of the collection), and the DELUXE 3 CD set for $30 (which is 4 hours of music, and also comes with an instant MP3 download of the collection). We also have both albums available in MP3-download-only form as well, for $15 for the regular and $25 for the deluxe.

Sales of this year’s collection have been much slower than the past two year’s collections, and we are still quite a ways away from our goal amount. PO shows often have an odd element or two to them. Here are some of the highlights from last night:

• We played “Never Gonna Beat This Boss” just as the bartender was playing a Rick Astley-themed game called “Rick Rollin’” on his laptop. Apparently, the bartender posted about it on whatever forum he was on at the time.
• I tossed aside my tambourine during “All Out of Beer“, destroying my stage beer in the process. I was literally all out of beer.
• One of the bar regulars was drunk and dancing near the stage for most of the electric half of the set. Gus — I’m calling him Gus because I don’t know his name — the old-timer working the front door told me he was going to remove the dancer, but I handled him so well that Gus let him be. Thank you, Gus.
• Gus told me he thought our band was really good and assumed we had been at it for a while now. We fooled him! He also said that they get some bands at the bar that should — and I paraphrase — go back to the basement to practice more.

The other bands on the bill were also quite entertaining. The Feng Shui Ninjas have great fans and a neat, eclectic sound (slide whistle FTW!). Beth Kinderman & The Player Characters felt tighter than the last time I saw them. I’m not always sure what’s going on, but the sound is dense and interesting, and they are clearly enjoying what they are creating.

Thanks to all our fans who risked a sleepy Friday to come out and see us play. Perhaps we’ll see some of you at our next stop, MarsCon.
