All vocals are recorded! There is some editing to do and final mixing and mastering yet to come. A day or two and we will have a finished album. Phew!

Recording Progress Report

Yesterday I got all of the major editing done on the new songs. I was also mixing as I went. That pretty much leaves lead and backing vocals left to do.

Today I finished all of the vocals for one song. I am waiting for one more part to be finished so I can check the box next to “finished” for this one. Only five (maybe six) more to go!

Basic tracking for the first full-length Possible Oscar LP is complete! There are a few overdubs to do yet, a bit of editing to finish, and some final lead vocals to record. The best part is that I have all of next week off to finish it.

It will be done for MarsCon if it kills me.

The Home Stretch

As promised, we have here another recording update. Here we go:

Song #1:
“Earn Hollywood Earn”, a parody of “Burn Hollywood Burn” by Public Enemy
This song skewers Hollywood and its lack of creativity with new projects. All tracking is complete for this star-studded adventure. There are guest appearances by the great Luke Ski and Sudden Death, as well as Wyngarde and the artist formerly known as Coburn.

Song #2:
“Screwed”, a parody of “Blue” by The Jayhawks
This song deals with the disappointing forthcoming release of the Star Wars original trilogy on DVD. All recording for this song is also complete. It features guest vocals by John.

Song #3:
“Dead Nintendo”, a parody of “Desperado” by The Eagles
A sad tale of a man’s desire to play his non-working NES. Recording for this is almost complete and should by by the end of the day.

Song #4:
“At The Con”, an original song written by John
This song covers some of the strange going-on at a sci-fi/fantasy convention. All recording for this song is complete, and I dare say it is my favorite of the group.

Song #5:
“The Room Party Song”, a parody of “Undone (The Sweater Song)” by Weezer
This is a little ditty about the room party culture at the aforementioned sci-fi/fantasy conventions. My sister was over to record the last bit for this one yesterday.

That’s the complete roster. I have final mixes to complete for all of the songs. I will post a couple of the finished songs here in the near future. CDs will also be on-hand at CONvergence next weekend.

It’s time for another Possible Oscar recording update!

Song #1: I have all of the tracks! Now I can finish the mix with great haste. This one has been a long time in the making and I am really happy to have all of the pieces to the puzzle.

Song #2: No progress here. It’s the last one to be recorded.

Song #3: No new progress on this one. I hope to re-attempt the vocals later this week or this weekend.

Song #4: All instruments are tracked! That just leaves the vocals. Something tells me I’m going to doing a lot of performing this weekend.

Song #5: Instruments done on this one too! Vocals have been started, but need to be finished.

Song #6: What?! There’s a song #6? WTF?! Yes, there may be a #6, or it may become the new #2 (wow, that was an unintentional Prisoner reference) if time runs short. The subject matter is rather time-sensitive so I really want to get this one in the can.

I also need to get to work on the cover art. Oh boy…

Like a Duck Drunk on Paint Thinner

I attempted to do some recording of vocals for song #3 today. It ended up being a good development session, but nothing I recorded was a keeper. I think I was a bit too tired from the festivities of the previous evening, so I was having pitch problems.

The good news is that I know now what I need to record for the backing vocals. I know the placement. I know the harmonies. I know how many tracks I need to capture. Perhaps tomorrow evening will prove more fruitful.

Recording Update

With another recording session planned for tomorrow night, I should post a progress update on the Possible Oscar 5-song EP. The project is still untitled. The songs will also remain untitled to the public for the time being. Let’s begin!

Song #1: Music arrangement and tracking is complete. Most of the lead vocals are recorded. Once I have all of the vocal tracks I can proceed to the final mix. This track will feature a number of guest appearances.

Song #2: Lyrics are written. No tracking so far. This will probably be the easiest of the five to finish, so I am saving it for last.

Song #3: Instrument tracking was started last week and is nearly complete. There are some additional guitar parts to record. Lyrics are written. Vocal recording should begin this weekend.

Song #4: This is an original song (though not written by me). This will be the next one to be started.

Song #5: Another track that is close to being instrumentally recorded. More guitars to be added soon. Lyrics are written and vocal recording should begin this weekend.

There you have it. It’s a lot of work, but it sure is fun.
